Baby sleep is unpredictable, especially in the early months. Your baby's sleep will look nothing like yours. They'll wake often, sleep for short periods, and change their patterns constantly. This can be challenging, but it's normal and healthy.
Light and Deep Sleep
Babies go through both light sleep and deep sleep. Both are important for your baby's health.
Light sleep
- Moves around and makes noises
- Eyes twitch or open and close quickly
- Breathing speeds up and slows down
- Wakes up easily
Deep sleep
- Doesn’t move very much
- Arms and legs are relaxed and floppy
- Regular, steady breathing
- Makes sucking movements
- Doesn’t wake easily
Tip: If your baby wakes easily when you lay them down on their back, wait for signs of deep sleep before putting them in their bed.
Night Waking Is Normal
Babies wake up at night to
- Eat
- Feel comfortable
- Stay safe
Your baby may wake more often during
- Growth spurts
- Illness
- Changes in routine
Sleep Patterns Change as Your Baby Grows
Every baby is different. Some need more sleep than others. As your baby gets older, their sleep becomes more predictable. This is what you can expect:
- Newborn to 6 weeks: During this period, your baby’s sleep will be unpredictable. Your baby is getting used to the world. They sleep for only a few hours at a time and wake many times during the day and night.
- 6 to 8 weeks: Your baby may sleep more at night because they're awake more during the day. Waking at night is still normal.
- About 3 months: Your baby may sleep for longer periods and wake up less often.
- About 6 months: Your baby may sleep up to 6 hours at a time.
