Easy Breakfast Ideas

You’ve probably heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day — and it’s true! Breakfast helps fuel your body and brain.

A simple way to build a healthy breakfast is by picking one item from each food group.

Grains

  • Oatmeal
  • Whole-grain waffle
  • Whole-grain tortilla
  • Whole-wheat bread
  • Dry, WIC-approved cereal

Fruits and Vegetables

  • Sliced apples
  • Mixed berries
  • Tomatoes, onions, and bell peppers
  • Avocado
  • Raisins

Protein and Dairy

  • Turkey bacon
  • WIC-approved beans
  • Eggs
  • Peanuts
  • Low-fat cheeses
  • 1% or non-fat milk

Sample breakfast combinations

  • Oatmeal + sliced apples + 1% or non-fat milk
  • Whole-grain waffle + mixed berries + turkey bacon
  • Whole-wheat bread + avocado + egg

Try Making This Dish at Home

Best Baked Breakfast Cereal | Serves 4-6

Ingredients

• 2 cups old-fashioned oatmeal

• 1 apple, peeled and shredded

• 1⁄2 cup chopped walnuts

• 3⁄4 cup raisins or other dried fruit like apricots or cherries, chopped

• 2 cups 1% or non-fat milk

• 1⁄2 cup brown sugar

• 2 Tbsps butter, melted

• 1⁄2 tsp salt

• 1 tsp cinnamon

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl.
  3. Place in an 8" x 8" pan.
  4. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until all liquid is absorbed.
  5. Serve hot with milk.

This recipe keeps well in the refrigerator. You could make it at the start of your week and reheat it for breakfast over the next couple of days.
