Mom to Mom Breastfeeding Support

You may have heard that breastfeeding your baby is one of the best ways to give them a healthy start. Yet, you may still wonder how to fit breastfeeding into your daily routine.

You don't have to navigate breastfeeding challenges alone. WIC can connect you with breastfeeding support from local peer counselors.

Who Are Peer Counselors?

Peer counselors are mothers from your community who have breastfed their own babies. Each has been carefully selected and trained by WIC to help new parents like you. They share helpful tips, encouragement, and referrals to support you and your baby.

What Peer Counselors Do

If you’re pregnant, your peer counselor will:

  • Help you prepare for your new baby
  • Share tips to get breastfeeding off to a good start
  • Connect you with healthcare providers, lactation consultants, or WIC staff when needed

If you’re breastfeeding, your peer counselor will:

  • Check in regularly to see how you're doing
  • Answer questions or concerns after your baby is born
  • Refer you to health care providers, WIC staff, or lactation consultants for additional support

More ways peer counselors can help

  • Tips for breastfeeding comfortably, even in public
  • Ways to stay close to your baby when you return to work or school
  • Ideas for getting support from family and friends
  • Help with common challenges, like sore nipples or getting a good latch
  • Tips for making enough milk for your baby

Hear From Other WIC Participants

“It’s nice to talk to other moms and professionals who know about breastfeeding ‘cause I don’t know much. They’ve taught me so much already. It’s nice to have a community who understands. They are so wonderful, kind, and accommodating.”

“The check-ins are extremely helpful especially to not feel alone because breastfeeding can be a struggle.”
